Knock, Knock
Mike heard a knock on his door. Opening it, he saw his friend Theodore standing with a backpack.
“It’s a perfect day today: not too hot, not too cold,” said Theodore. “Let’s go for a walk in the forest.”
“Great idea,” replied Mike.
And so Mike prepared some lunch and set off with his friend.
The Forest
The sun shone brightly as the two entered the forest. They followed one of several trails. Various birds sang in the trees.
Rest
After hiking for several hours, the two stopped for a rest.
Mike began drinking water from his canteen . . . but he noticed that Theodore was behaving strangely.
“You don’t look so well. What’s wrong? Is there something the matter?” asked Mike.
“Something … doesn’t … feel right,” said Theodore. “I don’t know what it is — but I can feel it.”
“Yes, it’s awfully quit now. I don’t hear anything — not even birds.” said Mike. ”
Continued Their Walk
They resumed their walk. Soon they began talking about school.
“I think the new teacher, Miss Bellamy is really cool,” said Mike. “She makes learning interesting and fun . . .”
“Theodore? Theodore? Theodore! where are you?”
Mike suddenly noticed that Theodore was no longer walking beside him!
Then Mike turned around and saw him: Theodore was about 100 meters away, running down the hill as fast as lightning.
“Hmmm!” Mike thought, “How strange . . . ”
GGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRR
Just then there a deep, loud growl. Mike turned around to see a huge, brown bear lunge toward him. Mike immediately fell to the ground, closed his eyes and lay completely still.
Sniff, Sniff
The bear came to Mike and turned him over. It moved and rolled his body. Mike didn’t move a muscle. The bear then sniffed all over him.
After going about this for a while, the bear went over to Mike’s backpack. He tore it open and began gobbling up its contents. When the bear finished, he walked away.
About 30 minutes later, Mike opened his eyes. He slowly got up. He then took his backpack and walked back home.
The Knock
A few days later, Mike heard a knock on his door. He opened it. It was Theodore.
“Mike! I’m so happy that you made it! It’s wonderful to see you again!” said Theodore with a big smile. “Say, let’s go for a night in town? We can go dancing, partying and merrymaking!”
“No thanks,” replied Mike, before shutting the door.
