First of all can all of you reach down with your hands and can you go ‘tip-toe, tip-toe, tip-toe’?
Okay, very good. Can you reach up with your finger and turn off the light and go ‘click’. ‘Click’, that’s the way to turn the lights off.
Oh, and the next thing we need to do is to — I know this will be tough for some of you but — we’ll kiss good night. Can you go ‘mmmmaaaaa’!?
‘Mmmmmaaaaaa’! Oh very good.
Okay and the last thing we’re going to do is very important. Can you hold out your arm? We’re going to pretend that it’s a door. It going to close — and it’s a *squeaky* door. And go ‘SSSSQQQQUUEEAAK’!
Okay, let’s try that one more time, ‘SQEEEEEEAAAAK’!
Okay, I think we’re ready for this story.
This is the story of the little boy and the squeaky door.
One night, a little boy went to spend the night at his grandmother’s house.
And his grandmother said, “Oh little boy, I have a surprise for you: tonight you get to sleep in the big brass bed — all by yourself!…But are you going to be scared?”
And the little boy said, “NO. Not me!”
That night, Grandma tucked the little boy in bed. Then she kissed him good night: mmmmmmaaaa! And she said, “now when I go out and turn off the light, and close the door, are you going to be scared?”
“No, not me.”
So Grandma tiptoed out, she turned out the light: ‘click’. She closed the door: ‘SQUEEEAAAK’!
Oh the little boy began to cry.
Grandma ran back inside. “Oh, oh my goodness. Were you scared?”
The little boy said, “No. not me.”
Grandma said, “I think you were scared. I know. How would you like to sleep with — the cat?
“Yes, yes, yes!”
So Grandma went to the cat basket. She got the cat. And she put the cat in the bed with the little boy.
Then she kissed the little boy goodnight: ‘mmmmmmaaaaa’. Then she kissed the cat goodnight: ‘mmmmmmaaaaa’. And she said, “now when I go out and turn off the light, and close the door, are you going to be scared?”
“No, not me.”
So Grandma tiptoe out, she turned out the light: ‘click’. She closed the door: ‘SQUEEEAAAK’!

Grandma said, “I think you were scared. I know. How would you like to sleep with — the pig?
“Yes, yes, yes!”

Then she kissed the little boy goodnight: ‘mmmmmmaaaaa’. Then she kissed the cat goodnight: ‘mmmmmmaaaaa’. Then she kissed the dog goodnight: ‘mmmmmmaaaaa’. Grandma said, “I think you were scared. I know. How would you like to sleep with — the horse?
“Yes, yes, yes!”
So Grandma went out to the stable. She got the horse. And she tucked the horse in the bed with the little boy, the cat, the dog, and the pig.
Then she kissed the little boy goodnight: ‘mmmmmmaaaaa’. Then she kissed the cat goodnight: ‘mmmmmmaaaaa’. Then she kissed the dog goodnight: ‘mmmmmmaaaaa’. Grandma came in. And she looked at that mess. And she said, “Oh my goodness. This will never work. This will never do. So she took the horse, and she put the horse back in the stable. She took the pig and put it back in the pig pen. She put the dog back in the dog house. And she put the cat back in the cat basket. And then that night, she put the boy in bed with her and grandpa.
But the next morning, she got out her tool chest, and Grandma fixed that broken bed: ‘bang, bang, bang, bang!’
She got out her oil can. And she oiled that squeaky door….no sound at all.
That night, she tucked the little boy in bed. And the cat too — but nobody else.
And she kissed the little boy goodnight: ‘mmmmmmaaaaa’. She kissed the cat goodnight: ‘mmmmmmaaaaa’.
And she said, “now when I go out and turn off the light, and close the door, are you going to be scared?”
“No, not me.”
So Grandma tiptoe out, she turned out the light: ‘click’. She closed the door. Grandma stood outside and listened: she heard the boy snoring. And she heard the cat snoring. And that’s the story of the boy and the squeaky door.
